Trauma Yoga

Harvest Therapeutic Services understands trauma is not just stored in the mind. We offer trauma yoga to give folks a space to unpack and work with the embodied elements of trauma.

WHAT ARE TRAUMA YOGA SERVICES?

Feel Secure and Supported in a Safe Environment

Trauma Yoga describes specialized classes or sessions built to support individuals who have gone through any type of trauma. This includes emotional, physical, or psychological abuse, which can also include major accidents, war, or other distressing events. Trauma yoga is an
approach to providing a safe space that caters to the unique needs of trauma survivors.

Intensive Outpatient (IOP) programs offer more support than traditional outpatient therapeutic services, and more flexibility than both residential and PHP programs.  IOPs range from 9 to 15 hours per week.

MIND & BODY CONNECTION

Trauma isn’t just held in the mind. It’s also held in the body.

Those who take part in trauma yoga services are encouraged to pay attention to all the sensations and emotions inside them. This helps focus on the connection between your mind and body, promoting self-awareness and self-regulation. Trauma yoga involves gentle and slow movements, so you’ll be relaxed and grounded.

UNDERSTANDING RESPONSES TO TRAUMA

Get support when having unpleasant reactions to personal trauma.

Instructors of trauma yoga are trained to identify trauma responses. This allows them to deliver individual support to folks who might have big reactions to the experience. These responses may include dissociation, flashbacks, involuntary movements, and/or heightened emotional states. Our instructors can offer support during these instances.

EMOTIONAL REGULATION

Trauma yoga is a therapeutic tool that can help keep troublesome thoughts at bay.

While yoga certainly deals with the body, trauma yoga can also help regulate your emotional state. The techniques used in trauma yoga deliver supportive ways to relax and keep those negative thoughts surrounding trauma from taking control. These tools can contribute to long-term resilience, helping participants navigate challenges in the future more effectively.

ENHANCED COPING SKILLS

Take the basics of yoga and turn them into ways to manage your trauma.

Deep breathing, mindfulness, and other relaxation techniques are central to the yoga experience. Trauma yoga takes all of those strategies to help individuals learn how to use them to deal with multiple issues that trauma brings to the surface. These skills will help you deal with stress and anxiety and all of the difficult emotions trauma can evoke during everyday life.

GET YOUR SELF-ESTEEM BACK

Building comfort with your mind and body will empower both.

Learning to deal with trauma can give people a sense of accomplishment. Trauma yoga helps individuals learn to engage with their bodies positively, boosting self-confidence and self-esteem. It gives people a sense of control over their bodies – and those experiences – helping to foster a sense of empowerment.

COMMUNITY SUPPORT

You’re not alone in handling this trauma; support is all around you.

A sense of community will develop amongst all the participants in trauma yoga sessions. Sharing experiences is generally voluntary, as there is always a strong emphasis on respect. Your confidentiality is also essential, and trauma yoga is built for each individual to address things when they’re ready. Knowing a support system in the same room delivers a safe space that is important when dealing with sensitive issues.
